Safety

by shetland @ 06 May. 2006 - 07:30:03

Shetland is the second-safest place in the UK, second only to Orkney, our slightly southward neighbours.

Its one of probably fairly few places left where you can let your children outside to play without having to feel you need to keep an ever-watchful eye over them - as such, our kids are generally active and healthy and thats a huge bonus in these days of mass advertsing of what is basically junk food for kids - full of sugar and fat and refined carbs. Don't get me wrong - our kids also love the Playstation/Gamecube/X-box, and will sit happily with their controllers welded firmly in their grasp for ages at a time - but as soon as the sun parts the clouds and the wind dies down the kids are out there on their roller blades or bikes. We know all the neighbours, and also know that should anything happen (I pray not) then we would find out quickly and they would be taken best care of in the meantime.

Its a great life for kids.

Glad to hear it - I always think 'should I say things like this' - because it might just tempt people to come here - and we all know that there is more trouble in places with more people....

Well - other than Papa Stour, but thats another story....

lol, and that could be a double entendre.. You mean the Shetland Isles? or the Blog? Dont answer that. Its not fair when mainland trash like me gatecrash your blog! :D

I'm on the east coast, and as you may know, a lot of the place names are derived from our Nordic invaders and colonisers, Thurso, Wick, Lybster, and so on.

Accents in Caithness and northern Isles are very different from those of west Sutherland.

Hope its sunny there sometime today anyway. Its sunny here, just now, but er you know that may change in ten minutes!!

I have no problem with 'mainland trash' really - in fact I think I have relations down your way somewhere - Keiss I think (would that be spelled correctly?) - but I haven't met them - and I work with a guy from Thurso.

Ironically, I haven't been as far north as you - the furthest I have been on mainland Scotland is Golspie.

But the weather seems similar somehow - four seasons in one day :)

Funny I was gonna say Keiss after Lybster. Are you in Lerwick? I know a girl from Shetland, her name is Laura and lives in Aberdeen.

Closest i've been to your way is when I lived in Armadale on the north coast.

No. not in Lerwick, although I was brought up in Lerwick (I am not going to say where I am though, as I quite like the anonymity of the internet).

You have a very interesting blog BTW, I have had a look and it has SO much more substance than the majority of blogs (including mine, unfortunately) - not that I am saying that there are lots of inane ones out there or anything....
